Vincent Desmond is a writer, journalist and editor living between Lagos and Port Harcourt, Nigeria exploring and documenting culture, queerness, fashion and art across the African continent.
Desmond previously served as a staff writer at StyleRave, a communications manager at Desire1709 and The Pop Up Marche and was previously part of the editorial team at Africa’s foremost fashion publication, BellaNaija Style. He is currently the editor-in-chief of queer fashion publication, A Nasty Boy.
His writing is explorative. It examines the intersections of culture, fashion and identity and attempts to find where they meet and where they divulge. In June 2019, Desmond was commissioned by leading British insights agency Canvas 8 to write a report which explored youth culture in Nigeria rising technology dominance, the reshaping of the communications sphere and how Nigeria’s status as a third world country affects it. The report has since been published in Canvas 8′s exclusive digital library where it is used by leading companies attempting to understand Nigeria’s entertainment industry. In May 2019, Desmond started contributing weekly to The Guardian (print) newspaper where he wrote extensively on what African fashion looks like in today’s world.
In December 2019, he was awarded with the Young Trailblazer Of The Year Award by TIERS Nigeria for his work in the media and for telling the stories of marginalized Nigerians. In January 2020, he was listed as one of the 150 Most Interesting People In The Culture by YNaija.
Desmond is regularly commissioned and published by prominent culture magazines and is read all over the world. Selected publications include; PAPER, NYLON, i-D, VICE, VICE UK, Dazed and Confused, AnOther Magazine, OkayAfrica, HUCK Magazine, Dazed Beauty, Canvas 8, Guardian Nigeria, Bella Naija and several more.
